Tips on How to Keep a Resolution

The Huffington Post has written an article on 10 Tricks to Actually Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions. These tips include:

Set Short Term Goals

If your goal is to lose weight, do not try for 30 pounds in a month. Set realistic goals. First, start with a pound a week, and if that goes well, then maybe move it up to two pounds. Do not try to start at the gym spending two hours during a workout. Try with 30 minutes walking on a treadmill. Walk before you learn to run.

Make the Resolution About the Journey

Do not attempt to fit all of your goals into one day. Spread it out over the year and take a little bit each day. Everything that is good and lasts has not come easily.

Schedule Time for Your Resolution

Make time in your day to donate towards your resolution. If you would like to save more money, then each pay period, decide an amount to set aside. If you are trying to lose weight, then set time before or after work and other social responsibilities to go to the gym and exercise. If spending more time with the family; set aside a time for dinner each night to be together; maybe have Friday nights be Family Game Night.

Employ the Buddy System

If you can have more people than just yourself have a common goal, it will make it easier. It will also give more time to bond with that person.

State Your Goals

Make sure to explicitly state what you are looking to accomplish. The more clarity that is involved with your goals may help to accomplish them in an efficient manner.

Keep Records

If you are losing weight, then recording your weight loss each week will help to visualize your goal. If you want to save money, create a spreadsheet of your expenses and find places on where to save. Spending more time with friends and family can result in great photo opportunities.

Get an App

MyFitnessPal by Under Armour helps to track a multitude of health metrics including, water intake, weight loss, calories consumed, exercises performed. This has been proven to be a reliable form of weight loss. If you want to connect with family, we suggest using social media including Facebook, Instagram, and even Snapchat.

Celebrate Little Victories

Make sure to celebrate the segments of your goal. Remember that the reward is to change your lifestyle, but adding additional treats is optimal. Whether it be a cupcake, taking a bubble bath, a glass of wine, make sure to never force yourself into doing anything and to treat yourself.

Reassess Your Resolutions

If you have completed your goals, or want to reevaluate what it means to make lifestyle changes, then take the time to do so. With record keeping, it is easy to note how far you have come from when you started the journey.

Don’t Give Up Easily

If you feel the need to fail, then take time. Making lifestyle changes is going to be very difficult. Try to stay firm, and if you fall down, try getting back. The journey is never a straight line, it will zig-zag, and there will be hurdles.
