You Can Get an Allergy at Any Point in Your Life

Today’s fun fact is that you can get an allergy at any point in your life! Maybe you thought you were in the clear if you didn’t have an allergy when you were a child. As a child, your parent probably brought you to have allergy testing done. Unfortunately, sometimes people don’t realize they are allergic to an item until they have an allergic reaction.

Allergic Reactions

An allergic reaction is your body’s defense against the foreign entity that is causing discomfort. Sometimes an allergy presents as a rash, hives, itching, wheezing, closing throat, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. If an allergic reaction is severe it will result in anaphylaxis which is when the airways tighten, you can no longer breathe, or feel a lump in your throat, and feel dizzy. If you have an anaphylactic shock you will likely use either Benadryl or an EpiPen.

Seasonal Allergies

Some people have allergies to the pollen in the air around them. Windy days help pollen to spread and people will breathe it in more than on a non-windy day. Pollen acts as an irritant to the nasal passages. Seasonal allergy symptoms include sneezing, coughing, runny nose, and watery eyes.

Common Food Allergies

Any food has the capacity to make someone with that allergy, sick. The immune system decides that this entity is too foreign, and decides to attack it. Common food allergies include; lactose, shellfish, fruits, nuts, peanuts, eggs, wheat, soy, and gluten. Sometimes, when you are getting a flu shot they will ask if you are allergic to eggs since it contains a small amount of egg protein.

Allergies to Non-Food Items

Any item that gets ingested by our bodies, or we come in contact with, has the capacity to be attacked by our immune system. These are a list of allergies from non-food items that commonly make people sick:

  1. Perfumes
  2. Latex
  3. Medicine
  4. Pollen
  5. Mold
  6. Plants
  7. Insects
  8. Chlorine
  9. Bee Stings
  10. Smoke
