Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Chances are that you already knew this because most companies change their logos to pink, and their advertising campaigns to feature survivors. Currently, Chevrolet has a campaign with the hashtag # I Drive For, which is why people drive their lives in new directions because they knew someone who has/had breast cancer. Chances are that you or someone you know has known someone who has fought breast cancer.

What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a tumor or malignant growth in the tissue of the breast. In many cases, this can metastasize, or spread to other parts of the body. Yearly mammograms and sporadic self exams may detect cancer earlier. If you have a history of the BRCA 1 or 2 genes, you may want to get tested more frequently.

Celebrities Who Battle Breast Cancer

The majority of people who get breast cancer are women, but the disease affects men as well. Peter Criss from the band Kiss admitted to a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Other celebrities that have had diagnoses include; Sheryl Crowe, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Shannen Doherty, Cynthia Nixon, Olivia Newton John, Sandra Lee and Rita Wilson.

What Can I Do to Help?

It is important to remember that while scientists and researchers are hard at work discovering treatments, a cure cannot be found without proper funding. If you can, consider making a small donation to the American Cancer Society, or to any charity of your choosing.

Moral support is key to any survival. Supporting anyone you know who is suffering with kind words, or actions can make a world of difference to them. It is also important to note that while they are suffering, their families may be as well. Allow personal and private time for everyone affected by a breast cancer diagnosis.

Final Thoughts

Have you or someone you’ve known had breast cancer? If you feel comfortable enough, please share your story in the comments. Do you know of any companies that go pink for the month of October to raise awareness for breast cancer?
