Tuesday Thought: How Can We Have Safe Summer Fun?
Summertime is typically the season most looked forward to by everyone. Kids are out of school, even some professions get the summer off. The weather is gorgeous, and there are so many fun activities to do outside. The importance of having summer fun, is to also be safe.
How to Be Safe
Summertime unfortunately raises the chances that an adolescent will be at risk of injury by over three times comparatively to the rest of the year. If you know that there will be alcohol at an event, make arrangements so there are no drunk drivers, or to all take an uber. Here is a list of other safety tips:
- Leave fireworks to the professionals
- Always wear sunscreen; summertime is the most likely time to develop melanoma
- Keep babies fully protected from the sun
- Wear a hat to protect you from the sun, and take it off in the shade
- Drink plenty of water, and if you feel you may be getting sick, call 911
- Wear protective clothing on hikes and always do tic checks to avoid lyme disease
- Don’t do strenuous activities in the middle of the day like running, or mowing the lawn
- Make sure a child is never left in a car; if you see this immediately call the police
- Don’t forget to take your allergy medication
- Rest when you need to
Signs of Heat Stroke
Heat stroke is no joke. Make sure you are getting plenty of water during the day, and not doing a lot of activity in direct heat. Heat stroke is the body’s inability to regulate temperature. The increase in temperature may cause the body’s organs to shut down. Symptoms include unconsciousness, confusion, agitation and dehydration. Call 911 for immediate care.
