ECMO stands for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. These machines are also referred to as extracorporeal life support (ECLS). It is a similar machine to the heart-lung machines used in open-heart surgeries. The ECMO machine is used to give your heart and lungs a rest by pumping and oxygenating a patient’s blood outside of the body. The artificial lung that the blood gets pumped into adds oxygen, takes out carbon dioxide, and then warms to body temperature before reentering the body.
