What Are Your Nails Made Out Of? This may seem to be quite the odd question, because it is not a material that one would immediately think of. Nails are interesting in that they have many function. The answer is keratin! How many of you knew that? Keratin is a protein that is found in nails, hair, horns, claws, and on the epidermal layer. Keratin is used to add strength to already existing keratin-based structures. Some cosmetics companies sell keratin based products for stronger hair and nails.
