ECMO stands for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. These machines are also referred to as extracorporeal life support (ECLS). It is a similar machine to the heart-lung machines used in open-heart surgeries. The ECMO machine is used to give your heart and lungs a rest by pumping and oxygenating a patients blood outside of the body. The artificial lung that the blood gets pumped into, adds oxygen, takes out carbon dioxide, and then warmed to body temperature before reentering the body.
