The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement

Today May 8th is World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement has over 97 million volunteers, members, and staff around the world. Let’s #KeepClapping to celebrate the achievements and bravery of the volunteers, members, and staff who are doing an amazing job each day. The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement consists of multiple organizations that operate independently from each other but are united through common principles, objectives, statutes, and symbols. The organizations are The International Committee of the Red Cross, The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies exist in nearly every country in the world with currently 190 National Societies being recognized by the ICRC. The Red Cross and Red Crescent teams respond to emergencies such as earthquakes, conflicts, migration crises, and health epidemics, as well as helping neighborhoods prepare for future disasters. World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is celebrated on May 8th every year. May 8th is Henry Dunant’s birthday. He was the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross or the ICRC.
