What Is a C-Arm?

A C-arm is a mobile X-ray imaging device used during surgery and other procedures. It gets its name from the C-shaped arm that holds an X-ray source on one end and a detector on the other. This shape lets the unit move freely around a patient and capture live images from almost any angle. NIH’s StatPearls notes that the C-arm was developed specifically to bring mobile, multidirectional X-ray imaging into surgical and procedural settings.

Not every C-arm is built the same way. Manufacturers group them into three size classes: mini, compact, and full-size. The difference isn’t just physical size. It comes down to the power of the machine’s X-ray generator, which determines what kind of anatomy it can image.

How the Three Sizes Differ

  • Generator power is the biggest difference between the three classes. A mini C-arm’s generator is measured in watts. A compact or full-size C-arm’s generator is measured in kilowatts, a thousand times larger. More generator power means the machine can push more energy through thicker, denser anatomy.
  • Mini C-arms are built for extremity imaging: hands, wrists, feet, and ankles. The Fluoroscan InSight FD Flex mini C-arm lists a maximum generator output of 750 watts. This power is enough for thin, low-density body parts and keeps radiation dose to the patient and staff very low. Mini C-arms are self-contained, one-piece units with the monitor built directly into the same unit as the C-arm.
  • Compact C-arms sit in the middle. The GE OEC One CFD is a compact C-arm that runs on a 4 kW generator, roughly five times the power of a mini C-arm. GE describes it as a “compact all-in-one” design, meaning the C-arm and the monitor are still combined into a single unit, but with meaningfully more power available for larger extremities and moderate-density anatomy.
  • Full-size C-arms carry the most power. The GE OEC Elite CFD, a full-size C-arm, runs on a 15 kW generator and can reach up to 120 kVp. Full-size systems are also built differently: they come as two separate pieces, a C-arm unit and a separate monitor cart, which gives the imaging arm more reach around a full operating table. That extra power and reach allow full-size C-arms to image the spine, hips, chest, and abdomen.

Examples of Each Type

  • Mini C-arm example. Hologic’s Fluoroscan InSight FD Flex is a common mini C-arm used in hand surgery, podiatry, and sports medicine clinics. It has a 120-degree range of motion and a flat panel detector built specifically for small-field extremity imaging.
  • Compact C-arm example. GE HealthCare’s OEC One CFD combines a flat panel detector with a one-piece design meant for tighter spaces, such as pain management offices or smaller procedure rooms, while still handling a wider range of anatomy than a mini C-arm.
  • Full-size C-arm example. GE HealthCare’s OEC Elite CFD is a full two-piece system built for hospital operating rooms performing orthopedic, spine, vascular, and general surgical procedures, where dense anatomy and a large field of view are routinely needed.

Final Thoughts

The right C-arm size depends almost entirely on the anatomy you image most often. A clinic focused only on extremities gets a clear, low-dose image from a mini C-arm at a lower cost. A practice handling a broader mix of procedures in a smaller room often lands on a compact C-arm. A hospital operating room doing spine, vascular, or general surgery needs the generator power and reach of a full-size C-arm. Matching the machine’s power class to the anatomy you image is the single biggest factor in getting clear, dependable results, whether the unit is new or professionally refurbished.
