Have you ever wondered how long it takes to regrow a nail? Women who get acrylic or gel nails know that between a few weeks for fills, they can see their tip moving further away from their cuticle. Recently we had one of our employees lose their fingernail, gross, we know. That got us thinking, how long does it take to grow your nail?

Nail Length

It takes between 3 and 6 months, depending on how healthy a person is, to grow their nail back entirely. Usually each month, the nail will grow about 3 millimeters, this means that within a month it should be around .12 of an inch.

What are Nails Made Out of?

Nails are made out of keratin, the same protein that hair is structured from. Keratin is a strong protein that helps to protect the nerves in our fingertips from damage. Animals have keratin in their bodies as well. Cows, horses, goats, bulls, and sheep all have hooves comprised of keratin. Keratin is also found in some animals’ horns. There have been a few weird ailments were keratin horns can grow on a human; albeit very rare.

The Longest Nails

We know you’ve seen the Guinness World Records titles. Last Wednesday, Shridhar Chillal was awarded the longest fingernails in the world, with a total of each of them added up to be 358 inches. But alas, and much to most people’s surprise, that is when he cut them. Historically, in ancient China, long fingernails used to mean that you were of the nobility. Having long fingernails meant that you didn’t have to work, because you couldn’t/ wouldn’t perform manual labor!
