Soma Technology Participates in a Dragon Boat Race

Here at Soma, we are constantly looking for new ideas for team-building events. A few years ago we participated in the Springfield Dragon Boat Festival. For those of you who do not know what this is, it is rowing on a boat in the shape of a dragon. This boat is usually paddled across a river and raced with other teams. Continue reading about how this race benefits the healthcare industry.

Why a Dragon Boat Race?

The dragon boat was first invented in ancient China. This activity is the ultimate test of how well can a team work together, especially one moving as a unit. Teamwork and cooperation are required in an effort to be win, and be successful as a cohesive unit. This race benefits breast cancer awareness.

Why is Breast Cancer Awareness Important?

Breast cancer will affect 1 in 8 women during their lifetime, and even affects men as well. Breast cancer is defined as a malignant tumor growing in the tissue of the breast. Tumors rely on angiogenesis, or the building of its own circulatory pathways of veins to steal nutrients from other parts of the body, to flow directly into the tumor. While there are many treatment options, there is no cure. Treatment includes radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, preventative surgeries, and immunotherapy. Chances are that you may know someone who has had breast cancer. If you have a family history of breast cancer, you may want to be tested for the BRCA1 and 2 genes that carry many different types of cancer on them.
