The Changing Face of Healthcare

The Ambulatory Surgery Center Association released an article today about the ever changing face of healthcare. President Obama is likely going to sign new laws into effect very soon.

The first of these new laws would be for:

“Section 4012, directs the Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to create a public, searchable web site that allows Medicare beneficiaries to compare differences in their out-of-pocket costs and in the total expenses for various surgeries when those procedures are performed in hospital outpatient departments (HOPDs) and ASCs (Ambulatory Surgery Center).”

This would allow patients using Medicare to be able to shop around for different procedures, and have more of a choice in which procedures they need/want to have performed.

The second provision:

“protects physicians who perform surgery in ASC’s and authorizes HHS to approve CEHRT (Certified Electronic Health Record Technology )for the ASC setting.”

This allows for physicans to be protected by any penalties they would accrue by not having electronic health records, or from use of the “Medicare meaningful use program.”
