AEDs such as the Zoll AED Plus and the Stryker Physio-Control Lifepak CR Plus are highly sought-after defibrillation systems and are equipped with a range of distinctive features. In the event of sudden cardiac arrest, an AED’s function is to restore the heart’s normal rhythm through a shock. While these devices share a common goal, they differ in the way they are used. An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is often seen in public areas for use by a non-medical individual in case of an emergency. Swift utilization of CPR and an AED by a bystander significantly improves the likelihood of survival prior to professional medical assistance. The AED provides clear, step-by-step instructions upon activation and administers a shock only if necessary, simplifying the process for the user. Shock only when needed.

WHAT IS AN AED?
An AED is a type of defibrillator used in public settings (airports, shopping malls, sports stadiums, gyms and fitness centers, community centers, schools and universities, government buildings, and hotels to name a few) to administer an electrical shock to the heart, aiming to correct or prevent irregular heart rhythms. This procedure, known as defibrillation, is intended to reset the heart’s rhythm back to its normal pattern.
Before administering the shock, adhesive pads equipped with sensors, known as electrodes, are affixed to the chest of an individual experiencing cardiac arrest. These electrodes transmit data regarding the person’s heart rhythm to a computer housed within the AED (Automated External Defibrillator). The computer then assesses the heart rhythm to determine if an electric shock is necessary or sustained.
MANUAL VS AUTOMATIC DEFIBRILLATOR?
On the other hand, a Manual Defibrillator is intended for trained medical personnel such as EMTs, paramedics, and doctors, offering advanced capabilities for diagnosing and addressing heart issues. In some cases, medical professionals may switch to a manual defibrillator for continued care after initial AED use. Prompt defibrillation with either an AED or Manual Defibrillator is crucial for increasing survival rates in instances of sudden cardiac arrest.
