Along with producing sound waves, they also detect the echoes of the sounds bouncing back from different tissues in the body. Based on the speed of sound and the time it takes for the sound waves to bounce back from the different tissues in the body, the ultrasound generates images based on these calculations. A lot of people know that ultrasounds can be used to get imaging of a fetus during pregnancy, but these systems are also used to image the heart, eyes, brain, blood vessels, breasts, muscles, skin, and abdominal organs. Images can be displayed in 2D, 3D, or 4D.
