Does Everyone Get Skin Cancer?

Our bodies have protection against the sun by the varying amount of melanin in our skin. This is why it is easier for people with lighter skin who have less melanin, to become burnt faster. However, people of varying skin tones can get burnt, and/or develop skin cancer.

What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is an abnormal replication of cancerous cells that appear on the skin, or in differing levels of the skin. There is a little mnemonic to remember how to identify skin cancer.

A– area, any mole that has an area larger than 2 mm may be problematic

B – border, the border around a healthy mole is usually circular, but moles with uneven borders may be cancerous

C– color, normal moles are usually brown, but if you have one that looks to be purple, red, black, or blue, immediately seek attention

D – diameter, healthy moles are usually smaller, and larger ones can be a sign of cancer

E– evolution, try to monitor your mole, and let your doctor know if you see any of these changes in a mole

Melanoma can usually be removed surgically without any severe recuperation time. However, there is a chance that it can be caught very late, and that is when chemotherapy and immunotherapy will be helpful.
