WHAT IS A DEFIBRILLATOR?
In summary, a defibrillator is a medical device that delivers an electrical shock through the heart to correct or prevent arrhythmia. This overall process is defibrillation. The purpose of this shock is to restore a heart to its normal heartbeat.
Before doing so, sticky pads with sensors, called electrodes, are attached to the chest of someone who is having a cardiac arrest. The electrodes send information about the person’s heart rhythm to a computer in the AED (Automated External Defibrillator). The computer analyzes the heart rhythm to find out whether an electric shock is needed.
