March 19, 2019National Certified Nurses Day 2019
Today is National Certified Nurses Day. We would like to take today to show our appreciation for those who choose nursing as their career, and their life path. Nurses devote their lives to caring for those who are sick, in need of help, and need daily care. Nurses are the ones who are present for their entire shift, even after the doctor sees the patient for a few minutes. Continue reading about nurses.
Famous Nurses Through History
There have been a few famous nurses throughout history. Each of their contributions has changed the face of nursing and brought us into the current period of nursing that we experience now.
Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale was a British nurse during the Crimean War. She treated wounded soldiers. Her basis of practice became known as the “Nightingale Principles.” She set up a foundation for modern nursing.
Clara Barton
Clara Barton was a Civil War nurse who treated wounded soldiers. Her basis of treatment created the beginnings of the American Red Cross. Today, the Red Cross is responsible for disaster relief, blood and blood byproduct donations, and some medical care.
Dorthea Dix
Dorthea Dix was responsible for supervising the first organization in the United States to care for the mentally impaired. Under her supervision, the first mental asylums were started, and began treating the mentally ill. While we understand more about mental health today, this was just the start of recognizing that there was cognizant dissonance and not just people who were religiously possessed.
