The Section 179 Tax Deduction is meant to encourage businesses to stay competitive by purchasing needed equipment, and writing off the full amount on their taxes. This free Section 179 calculator is fully updated for 2017 – go ahead, run some numbers and see how much you can actually save in real dollars this year.
The calculator presents a potential tax scenario based on typical assumptions that may not apply to your business. This page and calculator are not tax advice. The indicated tax treatment applies only to transactions deemed to reflect a purchase of the equipment or a capitalized lease purchase transaction. Please consult your tax advisor to determine the tax ramifications of acquiring equipment or software for your business.
The deduction limit for 2017 is $500,000. This is a large increase from other years, and means businesses can deduct the full cost of equipment from their 2017 taxes, up to $500,000. This can really make a difference to your bottom line at the end of the year.
To take advantage of these high Section 179 limits for 2017, the equipment must be purchased and put into service by midnight 12/31/2017. Use Form 4562 to claim your deduction.
The Section 179 Deduction is now $500,000 for 2017. This means businesses can deduct the full cost of equipment from their 2017 taxes, up to $500,000, with a "total equipment purchased for the year" threshold of $2,000,000. Yes, this is a ROBUST deduction and you should take advantage of it for your 2017 taxes.
Section 179 is squarely aimed at small to medium businesses that purchase anywhere from $100 to $2,000,000 worth of equipment. The full deduction can be claimed until that $2,000,000 number is reached. Once that happens, the deduction decreases on a dollar for dollar basis (when it disappears entirely once $2,500,000 worth of equipment is purchased.)
This makes it a very effective tax deduction for small and medium businesses.
Most small and medium businesses will greatly benefit by taking the Section 179 deduction. But to take advantage of it, the equipment must be purchased and put into service by 11:59pm, 12/31/2017 (in other words, when the New Year starts, Section 179 for 2017 is over.)
Congress has stopped the Section 179 roller coaster of the past few years, and has made the Tax Deduction limit of $500,000 permanent. This is wonderful news for small and medium businesses, as they know early in the year that the deduction will be there for them.
