    •  What is an EKG Machine?

Most people would recognize the trace or waveform that is displayed on an EKG machine as shorthand for the medical field. The waveform is found everywhere from billboards for medical services to online advertisements and has become synonymous with the iconography of good health. Many companies use this pattern to identify an association with medical care, as the heart is historically referenced to living a healthy life. It can be found in our Soma Tech logo! Cartoons and television shows use a flat line to show that someone has passed. However, reading these machines and the doctors and nurses who use them, have a slightly more complicated role to play in healthcare.

EKG machines are a vital resource that cardiologists and healthcare professionals depend on. EKG is short for electrocardiogram and can be referred to as EKG or an ECG. The word derived from the Greek. Electro for electric, Kardio for the heart, and Graph for “to write”. This helps doctors and clinicians diagnose what course of treatment follows the diagnosis.

Each time the heart pumps, it sends an electrical signal. The EKG machine is able to record how often one of these electro signals are sent. This is a noninvasive process with 12 leads that are put on different parts of the body. These leads detect how strong the different signals are and calculate the physical waveform. Each lead views the heart from a different angle. 3 and 5-Lead EKG machines are classified as portable. They record limited heart activity and are primarily used to monitor a patient’s heart during surgery, or on the way to the hospital. A 12-Lead EKG uses 6 electrodes around the heart and on the chest, and 4 electrodes on each arm and leg. These 10 electrodes together monitor electrical impulses from 12 different angles. •  Where is an EKG Machine Used?

An EKG would be used on anyone who is at risk of having a heart defect or problem. These issues include First, Second, and Third-Degree Heart Block, Mobitz Type I, and Mobitz Type II. People who are hooked up to an EKG Machine are being monitored for significant changes in their heart function.

    •  What is a Trained Clinician Looking For?

Clinicians look for information about the rate and rhythm of heartbeats. Through this knowledge, they can begin to formulate the general health of the cardiac muscles and its natural electrical system. Thus, allowing the clinicians to check for causes, or side effects from medications on the heart. They can also check for abnormalities caused by other health conditions, or to estimate the size and position of the heart chambers.

EKGs or Electrocardiograms can be done at a hospital, clinic, or cardiologist’s office. Typically, the patient is placed laying in the face upward (supine) position. Depending on the type of EKG test being conducted, the number of electrodes placed on the body varies with the number of leads that are connected to the machine. The most common EKG Machines we sell are either 3-lead EKG machines, 5-lead, or 12-Lead EKG Machines.

    •  Why Choose Refurbished?

Cost is the biggest deterrent to buying refurbished. Buying refurbished capital medical equipment allows the buyer to acquire about two refurbished devices at the cost of one new one. This helps smaller hospitals with their budget and competes with larger hospitals. The savings in hospital’s budgets can be allocated to other resources including new facilities, employment, and medical services. Refurbished equipment also allows the buyer to reduce, reuse, and recycle, contributing to a greener planet.

    •  Biggest Differences Between Used and Refurbished Equipment

There is a large difference between used and refurbished equipment. Used equipment implies that the equipment comes “as is” from the previous owner. Used equipment has an assumed connotation of being mishandled, broken and/or does not properly function. Refurbished equipment is far different and much better. The devices are brought back to OEM specifications. Parts that are broken are replaced by Soma Tech's large inventory of medical parts, which can be viewed at www.somamedicalparts.com. After these devices are fixed, they are enhanced cosmetically. The equipment is sanded, painted, and outfitted with new decals and stickers. Finally, the last process before shipping is a quality control check. This check ensures the product looks and operates properly. After it passes our QC, the product is wrapped up and ready for shipping. After unwrapping the product, it can be used as needed according to the owner’s manual.
